Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. - John 6:35
During Holy Week, Jesus sits down for one last meal with his disciples before he is betrayed and handed over to his execution. Through church history, the word "Maundy" comes from the Latin word for mandate... This is the Biblical event from which we draw our mandated practice in our Sunday liturgy to take, eat, drink, and proclaim the Lord's death until he comes again in glory.
In observance of this Holy Week event, we are hosting a Maundy Thursday potluck in the fellowship hall! We will participate in scripture readings, take communion with each other, and then sit down for a meal.
Time: 530PM - 830PM
We will eat at 6PM
Sign up to bring a dish in the narthex
Church will provide utensils, coffee, lemonade, and water.
All families are welcome!
Join us for an evening to celebrate Christ's death on the cross for our sin. The Good Friday service will be a "Tenebrae" service. We will not be offering childcare for this service. Read on for more details.
“Good Friday marks the death of Jesus Christ. It’s called “good” because of what Jesus’ death means for the redemption of the world. Worship on this day may focus on three aims: (1) to narrate and remember the events of Jesus’ death, (2) to open up the meaning of these events for our understanding of God and the redemption accomplished by the cross, and (3) to invite worshipers to renewed prayer and dedication” (The Worship Sourcebook).
“The service of Tenebrae, meaning “darkness” or “shadows,” has been practiced by the church since medieval times. Once a service for the monastic community, Tenebrae later became an important part of the worship of the medieval common folk during Holy Week. Today we join Christians of many generations throughout the world in using the liturgy of Tenebrae.
Tenebrae is a prolonged meditation on Christ’s suffering. Readings trace the story of Christ’s passion, music portrays his pathos, and the power of silence and darkness suggests the drama of this momentous day. We ponder the depth of Christ’s suffering through mounting darkness; through the return of the small but persistent flame of the Christ candle at the conclusion of the service, we anticipate the joy of ultimate victory" (from http://www.reformedworship.org/article/december-1998/wrath-lamb-tenebrae-service).
Join us for Easter Sunday! We’ll be singing songs of redemption and new life, reading the Scriptures, preaching the gospel, praying to the resurrected Lord Jesus, and celebrating baptisms! If you are interested in being baptized, email contact@trinitycitychurch.org and let us know!
